The Smile That Never Ends

Modern life can be messy.

The world-wide web is overflowing with people who want to be heard. And they are heard, for good, or for bad.

Some of these people think that they are right and that others are wrong.

Some of these people want the world to change. And they want to be the one to change it.

But, me. What can I possibly add to this web of worry, judgement, and inspiration?

I can’t give you a piece that is going to fight the good fight or change the world.

I am just…me. There is only so much that I can give. Only so much that I want to give.

To the world, I am small. But to the people in my world I am bigger than the sea.

I love my husband.

I love my family.

And by George I love watching my precious baby boy discover his world.

None of that is going to break the internet. And none of that is likely to change the world.

But all of that is good enough for me.

It always happens this way.

Murphy rears his ugly head, usually when you least expect it.

But this time, something went wrong in an ‘oh so right’ kind of way.

This time Murphy has made me smile.

Let me explain.

I bought this book. Save our sleep, it’s called.

And that’s what I wanted it to do. Save our sleep. Mine and Mister C’s.

I bought the book and…BAM! Baby slept through.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, ‘I’ve got to read that book’. Right?

Well, you can read it if you’d like. Or you can do what I did.

Buy it.

Don’t read it.

Baby sleeps through, anyway.

That’s right. This book must be magical.

You don’t even have to read it.

Instant sleeping baby.

And you all know what sleeping baby means, don’t you?

That’s Random, Again

When I was pregnant, I wrote a post about pregnancy related issues that seemed sort of ‘random’ to me. Random butt pains. Random dreams. Just random, randomness really. You can read that post here if you’d like.

Now that Baby C is a beautiful 7 month old cherub, I have had plenty of time to observe the randomness of parenthood. And, quite frankly, I’m hoping some of you have experienced these things too. You know, just so I don’t feel quite so, well, random.

So, without further ado, please find below a list of Mummy Miss Cookas’ random stuff.

Random thing number 1:
I sometimes—who am I kidding—I often start to burp when I am burping Baby C after a feed. Now, usually, I am a fairly gasless person, unless there is soft drink involved. So what the actual blazes is with that?

Random thing number 2
Baby C is a cot sleeper. When he wakes for his night feeds, I pick him up from his cot, feed him, change him then put him back in his cot. But, despite having put him safely into his cot, I still sometimes wake in a panic thinking that Baby C is somewhere in our bed, drowning in the doona covers. Sometimes, in my half asleep, delusional state, I even go as far as to tell Mister C to stay very still or else you will roll on Baby C! All the while Baby C has been snug in his cot. The entire time.

Random thing number 3
Another sleep related matter. This one occurred just the other night, in fact. Mister C had stayed up a little later while Baby C and I choofed off to bed. When Mister C came into the room, he woke me up. Or, at least, I thought he had woken me up.

This is the conversation that followed:

Me:  ‘Honey, can you please move this thing?’
Mister C: ‘Ummm, what thing baby?’
Me: Umm. Oh. I thought there was a baby basket sitting on my belly.
Mister C: Okayyyy…
Me: (Groggy giggle) That’s so weird, I must have been asleep just then. I so thought there was this baby basket thingy sitting on top of me. I could even tell you what it looked like.
Mister C: Go to sleep honey.
Me: Okay.

So, I’m guessing the two sleep related random moments occurred because I haven’t had a full night sleep in 7 months. But the burping? Well, who on earth knows.

I must be a sympathy burper.

Now is when you tell me about all the random things you’ve gotten up to, post baby. Have your random things been as random as mine? Please say they have!

The Baby in The Rain

Yesterday, I took my baby boy out in the rain for the first time.

We just stood there, together. Feeling the rain on our skin.
His face scrunched up as he felt the first drop on his little nose. His eyes blinked. He looked all around as if to look for it. But he wouldn’t find it. Rain is sneaky like that.

It was soft rain and it was warm outside. That’s the best kind of rain. The kind of rain you want to stand in. The kind of rain that makes you stop and realise that this big world of ours is far more magical than it might seem.

We forget to savour these little things. Life gets busy, we forget to stop.
It’s okay to stop. Just. Stop.

My baby boy turned 7 months old this week. I’m so glad I stopped to let him feel the rain.

Green Eggs and Baby

Do you want to sleep til late?
Oh no, you don’t? You will not wait?
A sloppy kiss for Mummy’s chin,
Please stop! Your teeth are digging in.

Now, would you like to read a book?
A funny book? Let’s have a look.
The book is not to eat my sweet,
Let’s read the book. Let’s read, not eat.

I guess this means you want some food?
You’ve spat it out, how very rude.
A pumpkin coloured carpet stain,
A Mummy who will take the blame.

We’re running late, get in the car,
Come on, we won’t be going far.
You will not sit in your car seat?
Oh, jeepers creepers, Mummy’s beat.

But when the sun goes down to rest,
That’s when you’re at your very best.
Your Daddy sings to you in bed,
While Mummy pats your little head.

Our precious baby, quiet and calm,
So safe in bed, away from harm,
You’re sound asleep now, precious one,
And dreaming of your day of fun.
